Anticipating Precipitation (RAIN)!

 RAIN Gauges

Despite the West Coast's reputation for reliable rain...we haven't had any real rain for nearly 2 months!

SO...in anticipation of rain on Sunday our Garden Warriors settled into making rain gauges.
Funnel tops were carefully cut off the tops of soft drink bottles...
...then placed into the top of the remaining base of the bottle...
...measurements or gauges, were carefully added to the side with a rain proof marker pen...
...paper clips hold the funnel in place!

Now just remember to smell to sit back and smell the last of the summer flowers while we ALL wait for rain!
This weeks bunch of flowers went home with this wee new entrant...Welcome to our Garden!

What Now, What a Morning!

What Now!

What an amazing morning in the Garden today!

Cameraman Mike, and Director Tony were up bright & early to meet our Garden Warriors in their Garden.
Every Garden Warrior had their chance to shine and share their Garden.
Pesto and yogurt dip was made, celery sticks and beans were dipped, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are the new "it" foods nourishing our Garden Warriors.
No leaf was left unturned by our Garden Warriors as they relished their opportunity to shine in front of the cameras.

Enjoy this sneak preview of what you will see in a couple of weeks time on What Now!
Well done Garden Warriors, you were all brilliant!

Gone to the birds

A little bit of up-cycling Innovation!

This bird cage was one of our rubbish dump finds last year, it is now keeping the birds out of our wee coriander seedlings!

All it needs now is a coat of bright and cheerful "Canary Yellow" paint and I think these re-purposed bird cages will be the new "tres Chic" for every fashionista's garden!

Warrior Worms work wonders...

Winning Worm Farms

Now that the holidays were over it was time to get these wonderful worm farms from the lovely folk at "Can O Worms" occupied and working for our garden...

Our Garden Facilitator called in Bernard the local Worm Wizard...who is very wise about all things wormy... to teach us how to care for our wonderful worm family.

These worms are going to work away under ground, finishing off our lunch scraps, & freshening up our garden
Bernard brought with him these wonderful "Warrior Worms" to work wonders in our compost...
Young Nathan gave us a hand to dampen down the situation...
...ready to release our worker worms.
Our Garden Warriors weren't afraid of these wonderful wrigglers, but we were all very amazed at how quickly they wriggled their way out of the sunlight...gone in seconds!
They really do prefer darkness!
We learnt about what worms like to eat...
...and what worms don't like to eat!
Our garden is certainly going to benefit form a weekly cuppa of "Worm Tea"!

A HUGE thank you to Bernhard & Nathan for sharing their enthusiasm and knowledge of worms with us, and the wonderful gift of our first worms!

Zealandia & Mitre 10 to the Rescue

This Summer Mr Lego Policeman has moved corners...

...and word on the beat was that our Garden Warriors could expect some exciting guests on the 11th March!

Our Garden was battling the longest dry spell since records began, with not a drop of rain for over 4 weeks straight...

The lovely folk at Zealandia and Westport Mitre 10 banded together and donated some potted colour and vegetable seedlings...
...team them with our wonderful Tui prizes & we should be able to freshen up the gardens for our special guests in 2 weeks time!
Tui goodness was mixed together and sprinkled around our gardens.
An army of Garden Warriors was ready to assist at lunchtime...
...while Room 10 got stuck in and finished off after lunch.
The fabulous Garden Warriors from Room 10 then tucked into a platter of cool cucumber circles, number 8 slices of green capsicum, Warrior celery sticks and Warrior butter beans...
The yogurt dip couldn't keep up with these keen Garden Warriors who managed to devour an over 0.7m long cucumber between them!

I think we need to add another tier of newspapers to this cool shady corner...just for seating!
Well done Room 10, you are great Garden Warriors!
